In recognition of Breastfeeding Week (August 1-7), Dr. Shital Patel reiterates the many benefits of breastfeeding babies.
Breastfeeding is known to be beneficial for not only the mother and child but for the society as a whole. It is the most natural and ideal way to feed babies. The World Health Organization recommends that mothers exclusive breastfeed (no other food or water, only breastmilk) for the first 6 months and then along with complementary foods till age 2 years and beyond.
For the Mother:
- Decreases risk of certain cancers such as breast cancer and ovarian cancer.
- Lactation hormone oxytocin is released, which aids in returning the uterus to its pre-pregnancy size.
- Feeding also stimulates release of hormone prolactin which has a relaxing and calming effect.
- Reduces risk of post-partum haemorrhage.
- Delays the menstrual cycle, thus maintaining a healthy gap between childbirth and next conception.
- Some studies show that the emotional bonding that occurs during feeding is most crucial for developing love and security.
- More affordable than formula milk.
- Easy option during night time feeds and while travelling.
- More hygienic as mother’s milk is already sterile; and there are no bottles to wash or sterilize.
- Saves time and effort compared to formula feeding.
- Helps lose weight faster as calories burn up while feeding.
- Reduces risk of osteoporosis.
